Here you see some of this summer's basil and squash growing happily and healthily in some large and deep hypertufa pots. Give those roots room to grow! My major project at the moment is a Tower of Lettuce, using the techniques in Hypertufa 601. Totems aren't just for bird feeders. This Tower of Lettuce will be stacked with planters for growing lettuce the bunnies can't get at. Here's the mini version. The "tower" version will have four planters stacked.

Jewelry Inspired by Hypertufa

May I have the courage today
To live the life that I would love,
To postpone my dream no longer
But do at last what I came here for
And waste my heart on fear no more.

"The purpose of craft is not so much to make beautiful things as it is to
become beautiful inside while you are making those things."
—Susan Gordon Lydon
(Quoted in Winning Ways)
Oh, no, I couldn't possibly do that.
Well, maybe I could try.
I guess I can do it,
but not very well.
I'm doing it, but I'm very, very frightened.
Oh, my, I'm doing it better.
Oops! I made a mistake.
Guess I can't do it after all.
Oh well. I'll try again.
See! I'm not doing any better
this time.
Okay, I'll try one more time. Maybe twice.
Hey look! I'm pretty good!
I guess I can do it, after all.
Wow! This is really fun.

This is the first large planter I ever made from hypertufa and for years I kept it in the front yard so passersby
could enjoy seeing it. I've also had a photo of this trough on my website for several years now.
Last spring I moved this planter to the lakeshore because I'd found a fabulous obelisk trellis
that I wanted to see from my office window. Doesn't it look wonderful down there?

By summer's end, of course, you could barely see many of the planters for all the beautiful plants.

Now you can see that obelisk trellis again and you can also see the birds enjoying their winter treats.
In just a few months the plants will emerge and I'll be moving things around as I do every spring.
Oh how I love it here on this little lake in northwestern Wisconsin!

Inspired
by the appearance of hypertufa, a series of eBooks
with unique methods and materials
for creating lightweight and comfortable-to-wear jewelry, all
made from recycled fabric, foam and plastic
Embellish your designs with:
Old or broken pieces of jewelry...
Computer generated art, type, photos...
Buttons and beads...
Fabrics and foil...
Marbles and glass...
Wire and rocks...

Start with foam peanuts or foam trays, combine with white glue, add a little acrylic paint,
and spread this mixture on a shape you’ve cut from a foam plate or a slice you’ve cut
from a 24 ounce plastic bottle. Add some embellishments and just look what you can create!
As we become more educated about what our consumerism is doing to our planet,
learning to recycle our throwaways becomes a wiser option than taking yet another trip to the mall.
Besides, once you get started you’ll discover, as I did, that it’s much more fun to make than to buy!
I started making jewelry using recycled materials more than a dozen years ago.
It takes a bit of practice, and it’s kind of messy until you get the hang of it,
but this has turned into a craft I absolutely adore.
